Why is Having a Clear Mission So Important for Nonprofits?

All nonprofits must have a mission, right? It’s the guiding principle that directs everything an organization does—from big-picture strategic decisions to the daily, seemingly small choices. Your mission is critical because it sets the tone for your organization’s success and sustainability.

Yet, too often, mission statements are written in vague, nonspecific terms that lack actionable focus. Without clarity, your organization risks making scattered, inconsistent decisions that may not serve its core purpose. A strong mission statement not only guides your internal operations but also attracts stakeholders, funders, and community support by clearly communicating what you stand for.

When creating or reevaluating your mission statement, think about SAVICC:

  • S – Specific: Be clear about what your organization does and who it serves.

  • A – Action-Oriented: Use strong verbs that convey energy and purpose.

  • V – Values-Driven: Reflect your organization’s core principles and commitments.

  • I – Impactful: Demonstrate how your work creates meaningful change.

  • C – Customer-Centered: Show your audience what you are promising them.

  • C – Concise: Get to the point—your message should be brief and memorable.

Examples of SAVICC in Action

Take a look at these mission statements from leading arts organizations:

  1. Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance: “We lead, strengthen, and amplify the voices of a cultural community that ignites creativity, inspires people, and is essential for a healthy region.”

  2. State Theatre New Jersey: “State Theatre New Jersey exists to enrich the lives of people from diverse backgrounds in New Jersey and to contribute to a vital urban environment by: Presenting the finest national and international performing artists. | Providing arts education programs to inform and build future audiences. | Providing a major performing arts venue in central New Jersey that encourages and enables members of the community to have a lifelong association with the performing arts.”

Both statements are clear, actionable, and aligned with the SAVICC principles.
